What Is a Life Transformation?

What the Heck IS Life Coaching?

“I am on a lonely road and I am traveling, traveling, traveling, traveling, looking for something, what can it be?” – Joni Mitchell

I’ll be honest, I’m not crazy about the term ‘life coach’. As a tennis pro/coach, I used to help people learn the grips, technique and footwork required to play better tennis. But how do you coach people to learn how to be happier, more successful, or break free of negative patterns/behaviors?

That’s the cool part about this work; I don’t teach, as much as gently guide you towards your own unique ‘sweet spot’ in life; where you can access your own natural abilities to express personal power in healthy, satisfying and fruitful ways; you can gain access to parts of yourself, your talents, abilities and self-confidence, you never knew existed. I can speak from direct experience, this is what can and does happen with coaching.

Learning to overcome a noisy, negative mind can result in clarity and inner peace, and with that comes an incredible amount of personal power.

Do you know anyone who doesn’t want to positively transform something about themselves or their lives — health, career, relationships, self-esteem, fulfillment, family, etc.? Who isn’t stuck in some self-defeating pattern or circumstance?

Assuming your answer is a ‘no’ let’s start with a simple question: Do you believe powerful change is possible in your life? Can you FEEL the change, right now? If so, then you can LIVE it out in daily reality, too. I’ve experienced this first-hand, so I can speak with authority on this. Sure, it takes some work, practice, inquiry and diligence to change old patterns and beliefs, but it can be done. This work instigates and fuels that natural transformation.

So much of this work is about slowing down long enough to get in touch with your truth, gently confronting your resistance and negative patterns by taking a closer look at them.

Looking back, I sure wish I had been able to work with a life coach who could have helped me align with my goals, and authentic self. But in lieu of that option, I learned and assimilated most of these tools on my own – it just took a lot longer

Coaching is ultimately about inquiry, in the here and now, and taking responsibility for your feelings. Exploring questions like: Have I felt inferior all this time, for a lie, for someone else’s benefit? Did I accept someone else’s definition of me as fact, when in truth, I outgrew that label long ago? This list of possibilities here is endless, and yet highly personal to you. Get to the deepest, most personal core for you, and challenge whatever negative belief you discover.

After being a professional writer for more than 20 years, I’ve learned how to communicate ideas, concepts and stories to others; for me, this work is a natural extension of that communication, and it’s tremendously gratifying to use this skill to help others.

Overcoming a Noisy, Negative Mind

Why does anyone need a life coach? Can’t you just be happy, reach your goals and/or find love on your own? Of course! Then why aren’t more of us feeling fulfilled, complete, and at peace in their daily lives? Because now more than ever before, life is demanding, challenging, stressful, isolating and downright hard, no matter WHO you are, or how successful you’ve become.

To be sure, even for the most successful, seemingly happy people, life is (even at the best of times), wildly challenging. More than ever, it’s often totally overwhelming. Uncertainty is everywhere. Even the truth seems to be under constant assault. Life can feel very isolating, and for many quality support systems can sadly be in very short supply. It’s just a fact, even for those successful people who have good friends, a job or career, and a relatively ‘normal’ life.

To reach a specific goal, release an old negative pattern, or get ‘unstuck’ in life, you may need the energy, expertise, and emotional support of someone else to fully thrive, break through your own resistance and barriers, and find that sweet spot in your life, and in yourself.

Everyone needs support, a fresh perspective on their supposed limitations ad challenges, a new voice, and the freedom to express (and then release) your fears and insecurities, and you don’t want to hassle your spouse/significant other, best friend, or close relative every day.

So much of this is about effective/transformative communication, fresh perspective, and time-saving, cut to the chase to enhance your daily effectiveness, and create my joy and fulfillment. And no matter what your goal, that’s what really matters, right?

To be clear, life coaching is NOT therapy (more on that HERE). Sure, you can discuss aspects of your life that may touch those areas – difficult childhood, traumatic events, long-term insecurities, etc. – but life coaching is about learning to be effective in the here and now, learning new habits, discovering new self images, and tapping deeper into your inherent potential. It’s about creating NOW, thinking differently, and discovering parts of yourself you may have never expressed before.

Of course, this is a lifelong process, and many don’t have the time, information or insight necessary to bring this out on their own. Enter the life coach, armed with enough insight, healthy tools, action steps, empathy and passion for growth to spur you to greater heights and levels of experiencing life and self. This work is about expanding personal boundaries, mental, physical, spiritual, and circumstantial.

I’ve made my living as a writer and communicator in countless platforms, in high profile, pressure-packed environments, and in more profound, peaceful ones. My expertise has been hard-won, but whose hasn’t, right?

The truth is, every brilliant idea has in some form already been written down, expressed, and I’ve gathered bits and pieces of those I’ve personally felt a deep connection towards: Wayne Dyer, Louise Hay, Marianne Williamson, Eckhart Tolle, Iyanla Vanzant, Michael A. Singer, to name a few. I’ve also found that reading everything isn’t enough, it helps to talk it through with a like-minded person, to really bring that new energy alive in your body, to make it feel real. You have to bring these concepts beyond the words on the page, and make them come alive within yourself.

As some philosopher said, there is nothing new under the sun. In one form or another, everything’s been written before. But how they’re written and thus communicated is what’s original, and my hope is that some of you will ‘get’ my unique brand of communication, and thus feel more freedom to make healthy choices for themselves, which make sense, and all those once firmly shut doors to open a crack, and perceive just a bit differently, themselves and the world in and around you.

This wonderful quote from author Carolyn Myss comes to mind:

Seeing clearly and acting upon the clarity of what you know to be true is what is meant by your “highest potential”. Make no mistake about that. Highest potential is not a job; it is a call to action based upon the power of your soul acting on truth.
